The agreement reached between Mr. Giannis Vlachakis and Mr. Triantafyllos Zoura at the offices of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food ended the years of efforts to create an Interprofessional Organization in the egg sector.
The leaders of the two factions joined forces and reached an agreement to establish a Unified Interprofessional Organization. The founding chairman of the Interprofessional Board is Triantaphyllos Zouras and the vice chairman is Giannis Vlachakis and as they stated with this move “we have a stronger voice and more power to claim the position it deserves for our product”. The newly established Interprofessional Organization includes almost all those active in the industry, in the production, marketing and processing of the product, with representation exceeding 90%.
The state of the industry
The economic crisis that has hit our country over the last decade and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic have hit the domestic and global economies. Under these conditions the egg branch could not have come out unscathed. Demand remains stable and imports cover part of it, but unfortunately this difficult situation has opened a “window” for some to make illegal imports, “hellenizations” and egg upgrades, imposing unfair competition in terms of prices, which Greek producers can not watch, as a result of which their viability is threatened, the president and vice-president of Interprofessional told APE-MPE, adding that standing is due to our love for what we do.Ωστόσο υπάρχουν και όρια για όλους μας. “If no steps are taken to solve all these problems, we can not be optimistic about the future.”
Future and exports
Speaking about the future in the egg industry, the president and vice-president of the Interprofessional Egg Organization noted “If we have to describe a central goal, this is to increase livestock and, ultimately, increase Greek egg production” saying that “we have a valuable product for the nutrition of all, young and old, of excellent quality and economical. The Greeks are not as high as we would expect in the world ranking per capita consumption of eggs “but as they emphasize,” today when scientists confirm how valuable food is the egg, there is no reason not to increase its consumption. “
Regarding the course of the Greek egg in the international markets, its export interest is mainly aimed at the wider region, such as Israel, “however” as Mr. Zouras and Mr. Vlachakis point out, “the goal is to increase Greek production: first, for self-sufficiency at home and secondly, to recommend to more foreigners the quality Greek egg “.
