Fruits and vegetables: same but so different

We eat them with great frequency and pleasure, but very few are those who know their differences. The truth is that many  fruits and vegetables are quite well known and recognized by everyone, but there are some that are very difficult to classify, such as tomatoes, olives and avocados. Really where would you classify them? In fruits or vegetables?

The fruit-vegetable war started many years ago and reached the courts in 1893 with the Nix v. Hedden case. In 1893, judges in the U.S. Supreme Court were called upon to decide whether tomatoes are a fruit or a vegetable so that they could be taxed accordingly.
Although the court recognized that the tomato is a botanical fruit, it ruled that imported tomatoes should be taxed as vegetables based on the "usual" definition of fruits and vegetables as used in the kitchen.
The truth is that some foods, although botanical belonging to the category of fruits, are gastronomically considered vegetables.

Which foods are fruits and which vegetables?

Botanically speaking a fruit is a structure that bears seeds and grows from the ovary of the plant flowers, while vegetables are all the other parts of the plant such as roots, leaves and stems.
According to this pattern, apples, zucchini and tomatoes are fruits, while roots such as beets, potatoes and turnips, leaves such as spinach, kale and lettuce, and stems such as celery and broccoli are all vegetables.
However, many foods that are herbal fruits, such as eggplants, peppers and tomatoes, are considered vegetables by chefs. The reason is mainly their taste, as these fruits are salty and not sweet.
