EU Organic Production Day established

4 October 2021

September 23rd of each year has been established by the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission as “EU Organic Production Day”

The three institutions signed a joint declaration establishing 23 September as EU Organic Production Day. The introduction of Organic Production Day follows the approval by the Commission of the Organic Development Action Plan announced the creation of such a day, for better information on organic production.

The overall objective of the action plan, for the development of organic production, is to substantially enhance the production and consumption of organic products, which will contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the “Farm to Dish” strategy and the biodiversity strategy, such as reducing the use of fertilizers, pesticides and antimicrobials.

The organic production sector needs the right tools to grow, as set out in the action plan.
23 actions are proposed, structured around three axes — boosting consumption, increasing production and further improving the sector’s viability — to ensure balanced sector growth.

To stimulate consumption, the action plan includes information and communication activities on organic production, promoting the consumption of organic products and encouraging greater use of organic products in public canteens through public procurement.
In addition, to increase organic production, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) will remain a key tool in support of the transition to organic farming, complemented by, inter alia, information and networking events for the exchange of best practices and the certification of mainly groups farmers and not so individual farmers.
Finally, to improve the sustainability of organic farming, the Commission will allocate at least 30% of its budget to research and innovation in agriculture, forestry and rural areas, related
