Heineken has announced its commitment to a carbon-neutral footprint in its own production line by 2030 and throughout the supply chain by 2040.
The announcement marks the first in a series of five key business initiatives that are part of EverGreen’s new growth strategy. These new initiatives, the first of which is “Brew a Better World”, aim at Heineken’s contribution to the protection of the environment, the support of local communities and the positive upgrading of society, something that the company has started since 2008. company announced that it will maximize its energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources by 2030.
2030 is a pivotal year for the implementation of the “greening” goals set by Heineken, as it wishes to have managed to reduce by 30% (compared to 2018) carbon dioxide emissions throughout the production and supply chain, from barley cultivation, packaging up to the transport-distribution chain.
“Our goal is to become energy neutral in our production facilities by 2030, in order to achieve the 1.5 ° C target set in the Paris Agreement. “We will further reduce our emissions through energy efficiency and accelerate the transition to renewable energy,” said Dolf van den Brink, CEO and President of Heineken.
“A large part of the total carbon footprint in addition to production comes from agriculture, packaging, distribution and refrigeration. This means that we will work closely with our suppliers and partners to achieve our ambitious goal of 2040. “
The Dutch brewery says it has already begun working to meet its targets, including reducing carbon emissions per hectolitre at its breweries by 51% since 2008.
Last year, Heineken announced that all beer sold in the Dutch market is made using 100% green energy. In December, meanwhile, a co-operation was launched for the construction of a wind farm in Finland, which will supply renewable electricity to the European brewery network, which supplies 13 of its companies.
